This year Iowa FCCLA has partnered with Operation Homefront in conjunction with the Iowa National Guard for our Statewide service project. The State Executive Council has challenged each chapter to collect at least 10 care packages to donate to Operation Homefront in support of our troops. In order to gather supplies, the Gilbert Chapter of FCCLA conducted a Community-Wide-Food-Drive. Paper bags were distributed to houses in Gilbert, asking families to fill the bag with non-perishable food items, personal care items, and leisure items. Members returned a week later on Friday, February 13th to retrieve the bags and use the collected supplies to create care packages to be sent to the troops. As the week went on, students stayed after school in order to sort the goods and package them into boxes. We were simply amazed by the number of food collected -- enough to fill 80 care packages. We would like to thank everyone who donated to our project!
National FCCLA Week typically takes place the second week in February. To begin the week, Gilbert and many other FCCLA Chapters visited the Capitol to speak to our legislators. Gilbert was represented by 6 students: State President, Austin Graber; State Officer Candidate, Nick Greiner; District 5 Vice-President, Noah Brinkmeyer; and members, Justine Rosburg, and Heidi Stumbo and Karli Jerman. Before leaving the capitol, these students met with Gov. Branstad, where he signed a proclamation, declaring February 8th-14th FCCLA Week in Iowa.
On February 6 we held our annual Spaghetti Supper fundraiser event. Proceeds from the event were donated to No Kid Hungry, a nonprofit that actively fights childhood hunger. This year we collected $540 from free will donations. Our FCCLA chapter would like to extend a HUGE thank you to everyone who helped with the event, who donated food/drinks for the event, and to everyone who came to eat with us! It was amazing to see everyone enjoying a meal our club had prepared, and even more rewarding to think about the positive affect our community's generosity will have on the lives of the children helped by this charity.
