Chicago, IL. – Gilbert FCCLA members recently participated in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) at Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) 2010 National Leadership Conference.
The Senior Parliamentary Procedure Team consisting of Patrick Clancy, Kendra Swanson, Taylor Schwartz, Megan Nelson and Joey Metzger earned a Gold rating. The Junior Parliamentary Procedure Team with members Ryan Gallus, Puneet Anantharam, Cole Buchman, Meredith Lehman, Johanna Holck, Matt Nelson, Colby Abrams and Joelle Swanson also earned a Gold rating. The Gilbert Middle School Chapter had members Hannah Dreyer and Molly Luzbatek earn a Gold rating in Illustrated Talk, Kylie Gerstein and Yuliya Ivanitska earned a Gold rating in Chapter Service Display, and Lydia Lavrova and Sadie Timms earned a Silver rating in Food Innovations. The National FCCLA offers 25 STAR Events to FCCLA students. The medals were presented at a recognition session honoring all participants at the McCormick Place Convention Center on Thursday, July 8. More than 6,100 members, advisers, alumni, and guests from across the nation attended the meeting. Approximately 3,200 students advanced from the local, regional, and state level of STAR Events to the national meeting. Additional conference participants included Rachel Irwin and Jacob Schoff as well as chaperones Mary Vannoy, Helen Nelson, Stacy Dreyer, Melinda Luzbetak and JT Vogel. The students were advised and coached by Family and Consumer Sciences instructors Betsy Ratashak and Karlene Wonderlich.
In addition to competing in the national competitions, students participated in cultural, leadership and service events including volunteering at a downtown Chicago soup kitchen at St. James Episcopal Cathedral. The theme of the conference was “65 Years of Leadership” and students were inspired to make a positive difference in their homes, schools and communities.
