The SEC met February 6th snd 7th for their February meeting. They started off the weekend by attending the FCCLA Board of Directors meeting Saturday morning. The State Executive Council made the finishing preparations for Day at the Capitol and made plans for State Leadership Conference! We finished making plans for the state officer candidate election process as well as a few surprises that we can’t wait to show you! Despite the bad weather, we had our Day at the Capitol on Monday, February 8th to kick off National FCCLA Week. Members went through advocacy training lead by the state officers and met with their senators and representatives and talked about a specific issue in today’s society that FCCLA helps to improve or solve through national programs and competitive events. It was a very successful day that not even the weather could ruin. We are excited to see you all at State Leadership Conference in April!
Hopefully everyone is recovered from Fall Leadership Rally! It was a wonderful day at Iowa State University. Members were motivated by guest speaker, John Beede, who challenged them to find their own mountain to summit. Following that, were several breakout sessions for each member to become more educated on one of the four peer education teams, FCCLA as an organization, fundraising techniques, the statewide service projects, how to become a state officer, the building blocks of FCCLA, and how to stay involved in FCCLA beyond high school. Each chapter was then challenged to help with out statewide service project. This year Iowa FCCLA is proud to be partnering with Children and Families of Iowa, a local charity whose central focus is also on that of the family (just like FCCLA!). The five programs offered by Children and Families of Iowa are: Domestic Violence, Teen Programs, Family Support Programs, Early Childhood Development Services, and Mental Health Services. Each chapter was challenged to donate 100 items, either bring them to State Leadership Conference or donate them to a local charity. Overall, it was a great day and a great start to the year! Next event: district meetings!
The SEC and nearly 100 other Iowa FCCLA Members gathered in Washington D.C. for the 2015 National Leadership Conference. The Conference was full of accomplishments, including 68 participants competing in STAR events, earning 36 gold, 27 silver, and 5 bronze medals. The SEC also introduced the 2015-2016 state theme: Destination Leadership: Pave the Way! The SEC bonded with members from across the nation during their training sessions, where they also learned about Effective Communication, Group Dynamics, and the Responsibilities of Leaders. The Iowa Officers took pride in using their communication skills to build the largest straw tower of any state! This year’s national theme, Together We Are Healthy, introduced the newly revised Student Body program, which includes a new mental health component. National FCCLA also announced our partnership with Leed2Feed for the National Outreach Project. At the conclusion of the conference, a new National Officer Team was elected to serve for the upcoming year. Our Officers returned home with their heads spinning with new ideas to make this year the best year ever for FCCLA. We look forward to seeing you at our next event! This year State Leadership conference was held from March 29th-31st. During this time, members had the opprotunity to listen to many great speakers, compete in STAR events, and network with students from across the state. Among the hundred of students and advisers attending the conference were Gilbert students Andrew Cannon, Andy Metzger, Austin Graber, Gillian Klein, Justine Rosburg, Lukas Daniels, Nick Greiner, Noah Brinkmeyer, Quinn Vandenberg, Tim Gallus, TJ Swanson, and Jordan Rydl. Gilbert was representeated at the state level by three STAR Event participants. Gillian Klein and Jordan Rydl each earned a silver their STAR Events, Leadership Service in Action and Career Investigation, respectively. Justine Rosburg earned a gold on her STAR event, also Career Investigation, and will continue on to represent Iowa FCCLA at National Leadership Conference in Washington DC this summer! Austin Graber completed his term as 2014 - 2015 Iowa FCCLA State President and handed over his office to Kate Closson of the Waukee Chapter. Nick Greiner was elected to the State Executive Council as 2015 - 2016 Vice-President of Public Relations. We're excited to see the impact this new officer team can make! |
